Experience the sounds of “Heaven on Earth” at the Allegro Community Children’s Choir Spring Concert scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Saturday, March 27 at Colonial Presbyterian Church in Kansas City, MO. Allegro Founder and Director Christy Elsner said, “The theme for the choir’s tenth anniversary season is “Heaven on Earth.” Elsner is thrilled that the choir will be performing several musical pieces commissioned just for Allegro in honor of its 10 year anniversary by composer-in-residence, Andrea Ramsey. Evening Concert with the Yale Whiffenpoofs

Each year fourteen of the finest male singers in Yale’s senior class are chosen to be members of the Whiffenpoofs, the world’s oldest and best-known a cappella group. Over 100 years after the group’s founding in 1909, the Whiffenpoofs continue their proud tradition of outstanding musicianship and exceptional entertainment. Each year, the “Whiffs” perform over 200 concerts worldwide at a wide range of venues including large concert halls, private events, country clubs, schools, and churches. This year, the Whiffenpoofs’ United States tour is poised to include Carnegie Hall, the White House, Vail Resort, and the Sun Valley Jazz Jamboree.

The Whiffs diverse repertoire includes everything from Yale songs to contemporary pop and jazz favorites – guaranteeing a dynamic and exciting performance for any audience. This will be a great event for anyone ages 5 and up.

Vivaldi’s Four Seasons is a point of inspiration for a new piece. The worldwide premiere tour of Philip Glass’s longawaited Violin Concerto No. 2, The American Four Seasons, will be performed by world-renowned violinist Robert McDuffie. Both works will be presented side by side.

Quilting: Then and Now features three contemporary quilters of note from the Kansas City area: Ned'Ra Bonds, Kim Eichler-Messmer and Sherry Whetstone. The Exhibit will also have a historical poster show of Civil War quilts with anti-slavery themes. The 5:00 to 8:00 pm opening will give the public the opportunity to talk to the artists, as well as experience hands-on quilting activities lead by Ned'Ra and Sherry. Kim will have a second exhibit area in her studio adjacent to the gallery, in the Pressroom Studios. She will be on hand in her studio to discuss her work. Internationally-renowned pianist James Tocco tackles Barber's taut, polished Piano Concerto, which showcases the composer's natural inclination toward flowing, sinuous melody. Berlioz's Harold in Italy was commissioned by the illustrious virtuoso Niccoló Paganini to showcase his recently acquired Stradivarius viola. Chloë Hanslip- Violinist | Free Discovery Concert

Now 22, British violinist Chloë Hanslip is already an established international artist of distinction. “[Hanslip] is likely to become the greatest violinist of her generation,” wrote Limelight’s Christopher Latham. Her recent recording of John Adams’ Violin Concerto with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra entered the U.K. Classical Charts at number 2. Philip Clark, writing in Gramophone, concluded that “Playing like this should secure Chloë Hanslip’s reputation for life.” When she was just 11, Hanslip was a featured performer in a BBC presentation Masterclass, led by charismatic Russian violinist Maxim Vengerov. (In 1993, the Harriman-Jewell Series presented Vengerov in his American recital debut.)

Houston Ballet II

The Houston Ballet II, the venerable Houston Ballet’s smaller ensemble, is well suited for the Folly Theater’s intimate space. “They might be called ‘II’ but there’s nothing second-fiddle about these young dancers,” declared ArtsHouston’s Nancy Wozny. When celebrated instrumentalists Gautier Capuçon (cellist) and Gabriela Montero (pianist) met they quickly moved from fast friends to musical partners. The young duo developed the program to be performed in Kansas City that includes Rachmaninov, Mendelssohn, and Prokofiev cello and piano sonatas. Their collaborative work of Rachmaninov and Prokofiev compositions was released as an album in 2008 titled Rhapsody on Virgin Classics. Gramophone recently praised Capuçon for “distinctive, characterful, and intense performances.” Montero famously performed in a quartet that included Series favorites Yo-Yo Ma and Itzhak Perlman at the 2009 United States Presidential Inauguration Ceremony.

Emanuel Ax- pianist in recital | Richard Harriman Memorial Benefit

Emanuel Ax is a beloved giant among performing artists of our day. The pianist has played for the Harriman-Jewell Series 10 times, most recently in a duo recital with pianist Yefim Bronfman in 2008, and has appeared four times with cellist Yo-Yo Ma beginning with his Series debut in 1984. This longstanding relationship is evident in Ax’s request to play a benefit recital in tribute to Series founder and artistic director Richard Harriman, who died on July 15, 2010. Ax captured public attention in 1974 when he won the first Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition in Tel Aviv. In 1975 he won the Michaels Award of Young Concert Artists followed four years later by the coveted Avery Fisher Prize. The Washington Post music critic recently declared that “Ax is an extremely satisfying pianist; he is at home in a wide variety of music and his pianism is always thoughtful, lyrical, lustrous.”

The King's Singers Holiday Concert

Dark Matter announces its inaugural performance, entitled Orbit, at Union Station's Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium. Dark Matter is a collaboration of composers, performers, and scientists. It fuses cutting-edge technology with exceptional musical artistry. The result is an art form that blurs the boundaries between performance, education, and composition by blending them into an event produced at one of the largest stardomes in the country.

Experience the beauty of the cosmos with an incredible journey into space. Astronomer Bob Riddle will guide you through the solar system and beyond while original electro-acoustic music gives you the feeling of weightlessness. Composers Daniel Eichenbaum and Richard Johnson collaborate with performers Rebecca Ashe and Cheryl Melfi to create live music under the Gottlieb Planetarium's sixty-foot dome. Presented in full-screen projection with surround-sound, Dark Matter is an audio-visual treat audiences won't soon forget.

Orbit is an entirely original production created by the members of Dark Matter and is suitable for all audiences. These performances are supported in part by an Inspiration Grant from the Metropolitan Arts Council of Kansas City. Dark Matter is also sponsored by the HMS Beagle, Kansas City's ultimate science store. Kansas City Wind Symphony Continues “A time Capsule”

The Kansas City Wind Symphony under the leadership of Dr. Phil Posey and Pat Setser will continue their 13^th Season “A Time Capsule” on Sunday evening, February 13, 2011, with a free concert at 7:00 o’clock at Village Presbyterian Church in Prairie Village, Kansas. The free concert entitled “Looking Back – The North and The South” will feature a nostalgic look into our nation’s past. On this 50^th anniversary of publication, of Harper Lee’s novel “To Kill a Mockingbird”, Anne Mill Sizemore will read selected passages from the novel during music from the film by Elmer Bernstein. John Falkenstein will portray Abraham Lincoln during the performance of Aaron Copland’s “Lincoln Portrait.” American contemporary composer Donald Grantham’s setting of tunes from the 1835 publication of “Southern Harmony” by William Walker will lend a further nostalgic note to the evening’s performance. Also included on the program is Aaron Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man”, Sousa’s “Fugue on Yankee Doodle”, Jerry Bilik’s “American Civil War Fantasy” and Morton Gould’s “American Salute.” Principal trombonist Lee Finch will read the “Sullivan Ballou Letter” from the Civil War era during the “Ashokan Farewell.” Stephanie Brown, violinist, and James Grimm, guitarist will provide the musical setting, followed by Calvin Custer’s arrangement for wind ensemble.

The Kansas City Wind Symphony was founded in 1998 by Village Presbyterian Church in Prairie Village Kansas, the second largest Presbyterian Church in the nation. Membership includes some of the heartland region’s finest professional and accomplished musicians along with numerous music educators who give of their time and expertise to perform the finest in wind band literature. In April of 2008 the group made its debut in Carnegie Hall in New York City as part of the “Ensemble Spotlight Series” by MidAmerica Productions. In March of 2011, The Kansas City Wind Symphony will join the Saint Louis Wind Symphony for a joint concert in St. Louis.

East Hill Singers Join with Wind Symphony in Patriotic Concert

The Kansas City Wind Symphony under the leadership of Dr. Phil Posey and Pat Setser will continue their 13^th Season “A Time Capsule” on Sunday afternoon, April 3, 2011, with a free concert at 3:00 o’clock at Village Presbyterian Church in Prairie Village, Kansas. The patriotic concert entitled “And Thou, America!” will feature “The Testament of Freedom” for male chorus and wind orchestra by American composer Randall Thompson. The text of Thomson’s work is taken from the writings of Thomas Jefferson from 1774 to 1821. The East Hill Singers, conducted by Kirk Carson, is a chorus of inmates from the minimum security unit of Lansing Correctional Facility and volunteer singers from the greater Kansas City area. The chorus is presented by Arts in Prison Inc. founded in 1995 by Kansas native, Elvera Voth, who served as conductor of the East Hill Singers until 2008. The group is a not-for-profit, tax exempt organization funded by private donations, corporations and grants. Their mission is to facilitate personal growth through the arts for the incarcerated and their families. Also included on the program is William Schuman’s “New England Triptych,” based on songs by the New England composer William Billings (1746-1800) and “Flag of Stars” by English composer Gordon Jacob. John Wasson’s “American Fanfare” originally composed for the Dallas Brass will open the program and Carmen Dragon’s setting of “America The Beautiful” will close the concert.
