Ned'Ra Bonds Sherry Whetstone Kim Eichler-Messmer

Quilting: Then and Now features three contemporary quilters of note from the Kansas City area: Ned'Ra Bonds, Kim Eichler-Messmer and Sherry Whetstone. The Exhibit will also have a historical poster show of Civil War quilts with anti-slavery themes. The 5:00 to 8:00 pm opening will give the public the opportunity to talk to the artists, as well as experience hands-on quilting activities lead by Ned'Ra and Sherry. Kim will have a second exhibit area in her studio adjacent to the gallery, in the Pressroom Studios. She will be on hand in her studio to discuss her work. Harriet Jacobs is adapted from Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, one of the most important books in the history of the Abolitionist Movement. After nearly seven years hiding in a tiny garret above her grandmother’s home, Harriet Ann Jacobs secretly boarded a boat and escaped to New York and, eventually, freedom. This young slave woman’s remarkable story of triumph over the bitterest oppression will be the most inspirational show of the season!

The library is celebrating the traditional Mexican holiday of Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead!

Unlike Halloween, the Day of the Dead is not a scary day. It’s a day to remember and celebrate the lives of our loved ones who have gone from us. Home altars are decorated with pictures, flowers, food and candy. One of the traditional decorations are hard candy sugar skulls. And they’re fun to decorate.

This craft program is open to all ages and it’s free. Bring the kids and grandkids!

It is the unforgettable and inspiring story of a woman named Celie, who finds the strength to triumph over adversity, and discover her unique voice in the world. With a joyous, Grammy-nominated score featuring gospel, jazz, pop and the blues, "The Color Purple" is about hope and the healing power of love.

This production is directed by Gary Griffin and features a libretto by Pulitzer Prize-winner Marsha Norman, music and lyrics by Grammy Award-winning composers/lyricists Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray, and choreography by Donald Byrd.

Rounding out the creative team are Tony Award-winner John Lee Beatty (sets), Paul Tazewell (costumes), Tony Award-winner Brian MacDevitt (lighting), Craig Cassidy (sound design), Steven M. Bishop (orchestrations/arrangements), and Jasper Grant (music director).

The four-time Grammy-nominated Pine Leaf Boys are preserving the traditional Cajun sound, injecting youthful exuberance into Cajun, Creole and Zydeco music.

By invitation of the U.S. State Department, the group has toured the world since Hurricane Katrina to prove that real Cajun music is still thriving and full of life.
