Dance Theatre of Harlem Ensemble

Dance Theatre of Harlem Ensemble, a 16-member group of dancers ages 19-27, celebrates a legacy of artistic excellence with Interactive Performance

This family-friendly theatrical experience reveals and demystifies the world of dance. The performance is diverse: one-act ballets, dance suites and high-energy contemporary pieces, each costumed accordingly. Dances will be taken from the ensemble’s repertoire that includes Return, New Bach, Hallmark, Billy Wilson’s Concerto in F and Fragments.

To make it even more interactive, a few patrons (best suited for the extrovert) get a chance to go onstage, where they learn basic pas de deux skills and partner with a ballerina in a short dance sequence.

The Houston Ballet II, the venerable Houston Ballet’s smaller ensemble, is well suited for the Folly Theater’s intimate space. “They might be called ‘II’ but there’s nothing second-fiddle about these young dancers,” declared ArtsHouston’s Nancy Wozny. The company has planned a program to include the extravagant third act (the wedding and celebration) from the classic love-story ballet Raymonda, and Stanton Welch’s The Long and Winding Road set to Peter Breiner’s captivating, Baroque-styled orchestration of The Beatles’ songs.
