In his book, A Whole New Mind, Daniel Pink suggests that the MFA could be the new MBA as the hottest demand in corporate America will be executives who can manage creativity, not just processes. As more and more “left brain” work is automated or outsourced, companies are realizing that the creativity of their employees is one of their most sustainable sources of competitive advantage.
The arts can help develop this type of advantage – creating the kind of minds and thinkers needed today, more than ever. The values and skills learned from the arts include:
- Critical thinking
- Cooperative decision making
- Improved communication and
- Understanding and appreciation of diversity
The Arts Council is committed to helping Kansas City businesses become engaged in the arts – to be not only philanthropic donors but active, "right brain" participants. We have developed programs that are available to any company in the metro area – programs that invite artists into your work place and programs that lure them out.
“We need people who think with the creative side of their brains—people who have played in a band, who have painted, been involved in the community as volunteers. It enhances symbiotic thinking capabilities, not always thinking in the same paradigm, learning how to kick-start a new idea, or how to get a job done better, less expensively.”
