A message from Harlan Brownlee,
President & CEO of the Arts Council of Metropolitan Kansas City
Dear Arts Supporters, Advocates and Activists:
I must admit that as a young man, I had little faith in the political process. I was one of the disenfranchised, believing that my voice was lost in a sea of special interests and backroom sweetheart deals. I know better now. The fact is my voice does matter and, even more importantly, when my voice is combined with others there is real power created that can influence and make change happen.
For far too long those of us in the Arts have failed to embrace and take control of our political future. We have focused on creating inspirational and beautiful works of Art; pursuing artistic excellence. As Artists it is what we do, but we must remember that it is not enough if we wish to truly advance the Arts in our community and the region. We must recognize and welcome our political responsibilities and become advocates and activists for the Arts, because if we do not, we will continue to be ignored and marginalized. Our political leaders will listen to us, but only if we come to them unified and in multitudes. I am convinced of this and I ask you to deeply examine your own attitudes about the political process and join the Arts Council's advocacy efforts. Together we can do so much more than we can alone.
I would like to thank you for visiting our Arts Advocacy Online Information Center.
